This workshop uses passages from famous writers as springboards for writing in various genres—fiction, poetry, creative nonfiction, and memoir. You will be invited to take a passage from a text that you love, as well as from those provided by the instructor and write your own versions. Your inspiration can be sparked by the passage’s tone, rhythm, subject, theme, content, description, or by something in your life that relates to what you’ve just read. We’ll begin with paraphrasing and then move on to springboarding from passages from Walt Whitman, Ernest Hemmingway, Shakespeare, Chief Seattle, Zora Neale Hurston, Stephen King, and many more. By the end of the sessions, you will have experienced what it’s like to write a poem, short fiction, creative nonfiction, or memoir. Bring your favorite writing instruments and a willingness to experiment.
