Good dialogue is a great tool for both fiction and nonfiction writers. Yet, many writers avoid it. Let’s demystify dialogue — exploring “real talk” versus a stylized, written conversation. We’ll analyze what characters should say and how they should say it and identify how speech creates action and propels a story forward. The appropriate use of tags, dialect, subtext, and the balance of summary, direct, and indirect dialogue will also be examined.
