Blend literary and speculative fiction!
This course will explore the intersection of literary fiction and speculative fiction, with a focus on works by Kelly Link, Karen Russell, and other writers who experiment with genre conventions. We will examine how these writers use speculative elements to explore complex themes and ideas, and how they create rich and immersive worlds that blur the boundaries between the real and the imagined. Students will complete a variety of assignments, including short story analysis, creative writing exercises, and workshopping their speculative short story.
The course will use a variety of readings, including sections from short stories, novels, and essays. Some of the authors we will read include:
- Kelly Link
- Karen Russell
- George Saunders
- Neil Gaiman
- Octavia Butler
In-person class: This workshop will take place at 4508 Walsh St, Bethesda MD.
