Have you discovered the freedom of writing in forms?
Here’s an opportunity to shed any misconception that received forms are constricting. Inspired by Richard Moore’s “The Rule That Liberates,” we will do brief writing exercises that use the enchantment of meter and rhyme to liberate your deeper imagination. After exploring several traditional forms, we will experiment with creating improvised (nonce) forms. Participants may leave with at least one new draft poem and ideas for creating more.
Live video conference: This workshop will be held via our online video conferencing platform, Zoom. You can view brief tutorials on using the platform here. On the start date or the day before, participants will receive an email with login info (please check your spam if you don’t see it).

- How poetic forms can tap the imagination in unexpected ways
- How to vary forms and yet leave them recognizable
- Triolet and other short forms
- Ghazal and other longer forms
- Nonce Forms
Time requirements
- No additional time required outside of class.

- All reading materials will be provided.
