About Memoir Year
Complete your memoir manuscript in one year! Working with acclaimed memoirist Marcelo Hernandez Castillo, ten participants will experience the rigor and structure of an MFA program as you workshop a work-in-progress. All Memoir Year sessions are held virtually, and applicants are invited from anywhere in the world.
Note: Please wait for acceptance into the course before registration.
The goal of this intensive workshop is to write your memoir in a year, whether that means beginning from zero, adding to work already written, or revising an existing manuscript towards a polished draft ready to submit to agents and publishers. We will close-read contemporary memoirs from a craft perspective to better understand the foundations and functions of the curatorial vision that make memoirs more than just their stories. Specifically, we will investigate what are the characteristics that make up a well-wrought, challenging, exciting, and admirable memoir. This course will engage and challenge you to confront and define your own evolving and unique aesthetic sentiments towards story, memory, and the deeper meanings of your experiences.
This intensive workshop will meet virtually every other Thursday, from October 21-December 16, and from January 6-August 4, 2022, for a total of 21 sessions. Each participant will be able to workshop up to 300 pages for the duration of the course and a final “book-length read” which will compile all the work submitted throughout the year. A public reading will be held through zoom at the end of the year to showcase the work produced in the course. There will be opportunities to engage with guest speakers who can offer multiple perspectives of their writing practice and their own journey to publication.
