Finish your short story collection in only one year!
The short story collection is not a gateway to novel writing, but rather an artform of its own. In this year-long program, working with a published, award-nominated short story writer, ten participants will develop, tear apart, and try again until a short story collection is finished.
Class includes:
- Consistent writing deadlines, studying aspects of craft, and being part of a supportive community
- Panels and Q&As with experts in the industry
- Visits from published authors
- Participating in a public reading at The Writer’s Center (either in-person or on Zoom, as conditions permit)
This intensive workshop is geared toward writers with either a draft of a short story collection or several short stories already begun. Each participant will have the opportunity to present up to 300 pages for critique. These can be new stories or revisions of stories. The class will meet every other Thursday from January to November with a break in July, for a total of 21 sessions. In the fall, a public reading of work will take place at The Writer’s Center or on Zoom.
Although the class is primarily a workshop format, there will be discussions of craft and occasional exercises geared toward helping participants think more deeply about their own projects. These will include discussions of character, dialogue, point of view, plot, setting, and a variety of other subjects of concern to short story writing. In the fall, the focus will turn to publishing, including writing a successful query letter and submitting to literary journals. Occasional guest speakers will include published writers and others involved in the publishing industry.
To apply: please include a letter of interest along with a writing sample of 10-20 pages. Send your submission to laura.spencer@{{{{homeurl_non_www}}}} by December 18. Please do not register before being accepted in to the class.
LIVE VIDEO CONFERENCE: This workshop will be held via our online video conferencing platform, Zoom. The dates and times will remain the same. You can view brief tutorials on using the platform here. Shortly before the start date participants will recieve an email with login info. Please check your spam if you don’t see it.
