Write poems that reach outside your own experience, using the power of persona.
Ever wanted to try on someone else’s shoes? Read and write poems from the perspective of a musician, artist, historical figure, or scientist–or poems from the perspective of a household object, an animal, a mythological figure, a typographical mark. This class mixes close reading, craft discussion, and workshop of new or pre-existing works. We take into account the ethics of writing from outside your own identity. You’ll take away fresh or revised drafts, two per student, and a deepened understanding of the craft of persona.
