For your writing to have depth, you must convey your character’s emotional journey, but also create an emotional impact for your reader. Rather than spelling out a character’s feelings (anger, grief, love) in a preachy manner or telling a reader how to feel, one way to handle emotion and create layered meaning is through the repetition of an object or image (your father’s watch, a specific place, work of art, the weather, etc.). Threading an object through your story can cause the reader to better relate to the abstract feelings of your character. Reading examples and short exercises will help participants to experiment with this technique so that their chosen object will become integral to the story, conveying what is happening beneath the surface, and evoking a strong emotional response from the reader. This workshop will be helpful for writers interested in strengthening the reader’s engagement and empathy for their story, novel, or memoir.
