Persona poems are very freeing for both poets and prose writers—giving us a fun way to explore diction, voice, and tone. From the Latin word for “mask,” persona poems allow us to speak truth via another person’s voice, or tackle subjects in the guise of a mythical or historical figure. Like a good acting role, they let us take on another life and discover something about ourselves in a surprising or deeper way. We’ll look at a variety of persona poems and begin to write some of our own.
