Trauma can shut us down; writing poems can help us to open up. Learn, and try out, some of the many ways poetry has helped writers both heal trauma and prevent post-traumatic stress syndrome. Guided by an internationally published author of metrical poems, you will explore the science behind this, including an essay by the late psychoanalyst-poet Frederick Feirstein, and put several approaches to use in drafting new poems. The course includes close attention to musical qualities of poetry, reading and discussion of time-honored poems, class writing exercises, and workshopping of students’ poems.
