While many are familiar with sonnets, sestinas, and villanelles, they may not realize that there are new poetic forms created all the time. Whether it’s Jericho Brown’s Duplex or Terrance Hayes’s Golden Shovel, Billy Collins’s Paradelle or Wendy Xu’s Tiananmen sonnets, there are lots of new forms to explore in contemporary poetry. Perhaps you’ve been intimidated but intrigued by traditional forms in poetry. Here we offer a new approach. This course is less about measured syllables and more about allowing the constructive limitations we impose on ourselves to take us in new and exciting directions. More play than punishment. Serious fun.
