You will have the opportunity to generate new pages throughout the course and have at least two memoir excerpts (10 – 20 pages each) workshopped by your instructor and peers. \nWe’ll discuss the different types of memories\, the role imagination can play in personal storytelling\, and whether and how to bring research and reportage into your memoir. We’ll read excerpts from both classic and recent memoirs\, examining how other writers have organized and explored their personal stories. We’ll consider the ethics of writing about real people and events\, and how to establish the boundaries you may need. We’ll address your questions about book proposals\, pitching\, and the publishing industry. DESCRIPTION:Write your YA novel over the course of a school year with bestselling author Betsy Cornwell!\nIn this intensive ten-month course\, you’ll take your young adult novel from concept to complete manuscript with guidance from New York Times bestselling author Betsy Cornwell\, as well as mutual support from fellow participants. \n\nWatch the Virtual Info Session\nMeet Betsy Cornwell\, instructor for our yearlong YA novel workshop\, and have all your questions about the program answered! \n \n  \n\nWhat to expect:\nLive classes every two weeks will focus on craft talks\, close reading\, and the development of a practical “tool box” of writing and storytelling skills\, as well as group workshop time. You’ll also have access to one-on-one mentorship sessions with Betsy\, as well as the option to be matched with a classmate for critique partnership and accountability. \nThe best books for young people are both timely and timeless\, and require at least as much creative scope and rigor as writing for adults. Newbery-winning young adult author Madeleine L’Engle wrote that “You have to write the book that wants to be written. And if the book will be too difficult for grown-ups\, then you write it for children.”   \nIn this course\, we’ll consider examples of brilliant books for young readers\, and read through these texts together from a craft perspective with the goal of writing young adult books that are vivid\, honest\, and complex—never condescending or “less than” adult novels. If you have an idea for a YA novel that you’re ready to take seriously\, this is the course for you! \n\nStructure\nThis course is designed to mirror the school year\, from September to June\, and is offered during lunch hours Eastern time to give parents of school-age children the best chance to participate. That said\, you absolutely don’t have to be a parent to join us! \nClasses will begin with a short warm-up writing exercise\, followed by individual check-ins and discussion of the current assigned book (see below). For the first part of the course\, from September through December\, the rest of the class will focus on specific\, actionable tools for planning and completing your first draft. In the second part of the course\, from December through April\, the focus will shift to group workshopping and feedback. The final two months of the course\, in May and June\, will look at the publication process and assist students in developing query packages for their books. \nA YA novel will also be assigned for reading and discussion every two months\, for a total of five books. Participants are encouraged to nominate their own favorite YA novels for inclusion. \n\nSchedule\nThis class will meet virtually twice a month on Tuesdays\, for 20 total sessions. He is also a writer\, and he turns first to his writing\, hoping it will show him his past. But he has written primarily fiction\, and he struggles to separate the blurred lines between fiction and fact. He is helped by a policewoman who investigated his accident\, and a relationship develops. Then he comes upon something he’d written shortly before the crash. This writing disturbs him greatly and leads to a series of events that end with him traveling to Massachusetts\, where he spent the first thirty years of his life\, in search of ghosts from his past. Throughout\, he’s been troubled by questions raised by the car accident. What was he doing out on a deserted country road at two o’clock on a Sunday morning? He had no luggage in the car\, nor anything that might have given a clue to his intentions. Even the policewoman who investigated seems to have questions about whether the crash was really an accident. Also the author of Humor Me (2006) and chapbooks including Genetic Revisionism (2019)\, Claudia is an advisory editor for New Verse Review\, health/science writer\, visual artist\, and composer of tonal art songs and chamber music. Her stories are published in dozens of journals worldwide\, among them Folio Journal\, Prime Number\, Amsterdam Quarterly\, Mslexia\, and The Baltimore Review\, as well as four anthologies. Monte is a poet\, lecturer\, memoirist\, editor\, publisher\, and a finalist in both the 2021 Hippocrates Open Poetry and the 2021 and 2025 Gival Press Oscar Wilde Poetry competitions. His poetry is anthologized in Gathered: Contemporary Quaker Poets\, Immigration and Justice for our Neighbors\, Voices from the Fierce Intangible World\, and in The 2021 and 2022 Hippocrates Prize collections. His poetry book\, On the Level\, (Circling Rivers\, 2022)\, has been praised for its candor and humor. DESCRIPTION:Craft amazing premises for your novels and practice pitching your ideas.\nIn a world where so much is vying for our attention\, writers must hook agents\, editors\, and readers with an initial premise and be able to pitch their ideas succinctly. In this workshop you’ll learn three ways to create exciting ideas for novels and brainstorm a list of premises that are sure to get attention. You’ll then craft short written pitches—for your completed novel\, work-in-progress\, and/or one of your new premises—and practice pitching your ideas to the class. This workshop is perfect for anyone who is starting to write a novel\, querying a completed manuscript\, or preparing for an agent/editor meeting.
