Jessica Q. Stark is a mixed-race, Vietnamese American poet and scholar that lives in Durham, North Carolina. She holds a BA from UC Berkeley and dual MA Degrees in English Literature and Cultural Studies from Saint Louis University and the Universidad Autónoma in Madrid. She is currently a doctoral candidate in English at Duke University, where she was the recipient of Dean’s Award for Excellence in Teaching in 2019. She holds Graduate Certificates in College Teaching and in Feminist Studies. She is the 2019-2020 Rubenstein Library Fellow for the John Hope Franklin Center in African and African American History and Culture at Duke.
She has published scholarly articles on poetry and comics studies in American Literature and Studies in Literature in English. She recently defended her doctoral dissertation and is working on her first scholarly book project on experimental poets’ use of comics, cartoon, and pictorial media in twentieth-century US American poetry.
Her poetry has most recently appeared in or is forthcoming in Carolina Quarterly, Pleiades, Up the Staircase Quarterly, Hobart Pulp, Tupelo Quarterly, Potluck, and for the Glass Poetry Journal: Poets Resist series. Her first poetry manuscript, The Liminal Parade, was selected by Dorothea Lasky for the Double Take Grand Prize in 2016 and was published by Heavy Feather Review. She is the author of three chapbooks including the mini-chapbook, Vasilisa the Wise, that was published by Ethel Zine Press in 2018.
Her first full-length poetry collection, Savage Pageant, which was a finalist for the Cleveland State University Poetry Center Book Prize, the 42 Miles Press Book Prize, and the Rose Metal Press Hybrid Book Prize, was published by Birds, LLC in March 2020. She is working on her second poetry manuscript, Buffalo Girl, that explores her mother’s hometown in Hai Phong Vietnam, ghosts in Vietnamese folklore, and the contexts of being mixed race in the US contemporary moment. She writes poetry reviews for Carolina Quarterly and is a member of the National Book Critics Circle. She is currently an Assistant Poetry Editor for AGNI.
In her free time, she is a cat-lover and has been trained as a Level Two Reiki practitioner.
