SUMMARY:Poetic Rhythm
DESCRIPTION:Make the rhythm of your poetry run\, skip\, and dance!\nWe’ll learn the fundamentals of repeating rhythms in the poetic line – how to see it in others’ work\, and then how to adapt our own lines to repeated rhythm\, whether it’s regular meter\, or various rhythmic patterns in free verse. We’ll begin by scanning well known verse\, become familiar with the rhythmic structure of our own lines\, then practice rewriting one of our own poems in a metric form. In the second half of the course\, we’ll generate a draft of a new poem in either a verse form\, or in free verse which has been rhythmically enriched. \n\nLive video conference: This workshop will be held via our online video conferencing platform\, Zoom. On the start date or the day before\, participants will receive an email with login info (please check your spam if you don’t see it). \n\nIn this workshop you’ll learn:\n\nSounding out words aloud to find their stresses\nStrong and weak stresses – not a switch that’s on or off!\nBasic feet and how they are grouped\nIambic lines and their variety\n\n5\,4\,3 feet/lines\nHeadless lines\nFeminine endings\nElisions\n“Strict” and “Loose” iambics\n\n\nSkipping and Dancing rhythms – Dactyl and Anapest\nIrregular rhythms in free verse\n\nTime requirements\n\n45 – 60 min/week\n\nMaterials\n\nAll reading materials will be provided.\n\nWho should take this workshop?\n\nThose who are interested in exploring meter\, but who don’t really feel or understand how to scan\, those who want to write free verse with a more rhythmical component\, and those who already write in meter but who want to refine and expand their skill. Choose visual imagery and other poetic elements\, and how to present them\, whether in close-up\, middle distance\, or long shot\, and move from one set of images to another as you uncover the structure of your poem. DESCRIPTION:Create your own versions of metaphor and simile\, which poets have used for thousands of years.\nThis class aims to restore Metaphor and Simile to prominence in the writing of contemporary poems. In the first two weeks we’ll run exercises in class and for homework on generating metaphor/simile pairs. For the next two weeks\, metaphor and simile will be either added to a previously written poem\, or a new one generated using them. SUMMARY:Rhythm and Sound in Your Poems
DESCRIPTION:Enrich your poems with stronger rhythm and more colorful sound.\nHow do poems feel and sound? This workshop gives participants practice in building rhythmic feel and colorful sounds to enrich their poems. What does the rhythm of the words in your poems add\, whether you use meter or not? How much color can you add to the sound of your poems\, whether you use rhymes or not? And how can those elements work with what you have to say in your poems to strengthen the experience for the reader? In the first three sessions\, we’ll begin with exercises\, drafting\, and rewriting of a poem with special attention to sharpening the rhythm. In the latter three sessions\, we’ll concentrate on use of musical devices in poems\, again with exercises\, drafting\, and rewriting. Each participant will generate and refine two poems\, and learn how to think about rhythm and sound while drafting and rewriting. \n\nLive video conference: This workshop will be held via our online video conferencing platform\, Zoom. On the start date or the day before\, participants will receive an email with login info (please check your spam if you don’t see it). \n\nIn this workshop you’ll learn:\n\nRhythm and Meter – what’s the difference?\nRhyme and Sound – what’s the difference?\nSound and Rhythm – thinking about them while you’re writing the poem\nSound and Rhythm – how can they add to what you’re saying in the poem?\nSmooth or Rough effects\nPleasant or Harsh sounds\n\nTime requirements\n\nFor 6 sessions\, the homework will be around 30-45 minutes\, depending on the assignment and the speed of the student.
