SUMMARY:You are Here: Poetry of Place and Identity
DESCRIPTION:In this workshop\, we will explore how place informs our perspectives as poets.\nHow does a place inform our art? Use the lens of poetry and explore art across genres– From Cowboy Carter to the Star Apple Kingdom– to see how poetry can evoke different settings and speak to who we are in the moment. Join poet Daria-Ann Martineau as we read and write poems exploring the intersections of place\, identity and poetry. Students will produce three new poems about the places that made us\, the places we reside\, and the places we are going. \n\nIn-person class: This workshop will take place at The Writer’s Center\, 4508 Walsh St\, Bethesda MD. \n\nIn this workshop you’ll learn:\n\nHow to read a poem so we may give and receive constructive feedback\nHow poets can use landscape imagery to reflect state of mind\nHow different poetic forms can reflect different landscapes\n\nOutside of class\, participants will:\n\nProduce one new poem a week\nReview their peer’s work and come to session with written feedback\nRevise one of the three poems to share in our final workshop\n\nMaterials\n\nAll reading materials will be provided.\n\nWho should take this workshop?\n\nThis workshop is for poets of all levels\, but may be of special interest to those interested in landscape poetry\, environmental justice\, or themes of migration.\n\n\nIf you need an accommodation for this workshop\, please contact us at access@writer.org. We will attempt to fulfill all requests\, but advance notice is necessary to arrange for some accessibility services.
