SUMMARY:Reading and Writing Contemporary Poetry
DESCRIPTION:Write new poems based on exciting new poetic voices!\nIn this generative poetry course\, we will immerse ourselves in the landscape of contemporary poetry and craft our own poems. Each week\, we will read works published in contemporary literary journals from a diverse range of writers including Patrycja Humienik\, KB Brookins\, Kenzie Allen\, Hanif Abdurraqib\, and many others. We will also engage with their work via interviews/craft essays. We will then use techniques and inspiration from them to kickstart our writing process. With writing exercises and prompts\, students can expect to write at least one poem a week. There will be opportunities to receive written feedback on your work from your peers\, plus feedback from the instructor across the duration of the class. \n\nLearn at your own pace: This workshop will take place over Wet Ink\, which is an asynchronous creative writing platform. The instructor will post a lesson and assignment at the beginning of each week\, and participants can log in and read the lessons/post assignments/comment on other classmates’ work at their convenience. Shortly before the start date\, participants will receive an invite from Wet Ink to create their login info and access the class. Please check your spam if you don’t see it. \n\nIn this workshop you’ll learn:\n\nCraft Elements of Contemporary Poetry\nPoetry Writing Prompts\nWays to Tap Into Your Creativity (and Maintain a Creative Practice)\nHow to Find New Journals/Poets for Inspiration\n\nTime requirements\n\nApproximately 2-3 hours a week\n\nMaterials\n\nAll reading materials will be provided.\n\nWho should take this workshop?\n\nThis workshop is designed for poets and writers of all levels who are interested in generating new work and gaining inspiration from new poetic voices at their own pace.\n\n\nIf you need an accommodation for this workshop\, please contact us at access@writer.org. SUMMARY:Poetry Writing and Revision
DESCRIPTION:Craft new work and rebuild your relationship to revision\nFor some poets\, the most difficult part of writing is getting to the page\, but for others\, it is the act of revisiting those early drafts. This course will help students not only write new work with ease\, but also return to those poems with a keen eye towards revision. To start\, students will respond to weekly prompts with a craft focus\, based on contemporary readings from poets like Taylor Byas\, Kenzie Allen\, Chen Chen\, and Kaveh Akbar. Midway through the course\, we will shift our focus to revision\, re-approaching the poems from earlier weeks. Readings and exercises will outline various revision strategies and techniques aimed at giving students new entry points into their work. By the end of the course\, students can expect to have written at least 3-6 new poems\, with 3 substantial revisions. There will be opportunities to receive feedback from other students and the instructor\, but this is not an entirely workshop-style course. Students should have at least one poem in its early draft stages to begin the course. Note: there will be no class meeting on Wednesday\, July 2nd. \n\nLive video conference: This workshop will be held via our online video conferencing platform\, Zoom. You can view brief tutorials on using the platform here. On the start date or the day before\, participants will receive an email with login info (please check your spam if you don’t see it). \n\nIn this workshop you’ll learn:\n\nContemporary Forms\nRevision Strategies\nPoetry Writing Prompts\n\nTime requirements\n\n2-3 hours/week\n\nMaterials\n\nAll reading materials will be provided.\n\nWho should take this workshop?\n\nThis workshop is designed for poets who want to generate new work and experiment with new approaches to revision.\n\n\nIf you need an accommodation for this workshop\, please contact us at access@writer.org. We will attempt to fulfill all requests\, but advance notice is necessary to arrange for some accessibility services.

SUMMARY:$40 Pop Up! Embracing Radical Revision
DESCRIPTION:Revision is one of the most intimate\, but also one of the most daunting\, parts of the writing process. For some\, revision looks like tinkering—small edits here and there to sharpen a poem. For others\, revision is measured and planned out\, with numerous drafts accumulating throughout the process. Sometimes\, our tried-and-true methods don’t seem to work. Radical revision\, which can involve anything from drastic restructuring to completely rewriting\, is perhaps the most intimidating revision style of all\, but it is a fruitful approach that can open up new windows of opportunity for our poems. \nIn this workshop\, we’ll talk through our preferred revision approaches and learn from each other through the ways we each attempt to re-see and re-experience our poems. With that foundation\, we’ll jump into the expansive world of radical revision. With brief craft readings and in-class exercises\, you will start to embrace the possibilities of radical revision. Hopefully\, after our time together\, you’ll go back to your work with fresh eyes and excitement. It will be helpful to have at least one poem in-progress (perhaps one that has you at a revision dead-end) before the start of the workshop to give you a foundation for our exercises.
