SUMMARY:Setting in Fiction: Beyond Time and Place
DESCRIPTION:Write beyond conventional ideas of setting to elevate your fiction!\nSetting is the foundation for any story. Whether you’re thinking about character\, motivation\, obstacles\, plot\, or the feelings you want to invoke in your reader\, setting is where your entire story takes root. This one-session class expands on traditional ideas of setting as merely the where and when of story. Writers will acquaint themselves beyond typical conventions of setting through a short lecture and brief in-class readings. Writing prompts and in-class writing time will be intermixed throughout. Whether you’re writing a realistic story or an otherworldly one that might involve more world-building\, you’ll leave this class with concrete tools to apply to your current project or your next one. \n\nLive video conference: This workshop will be held via our online video conferencing platform\, Zoom. You can view brief tutorials on using the platform here. On the start date or the day before\, participants will receive an email with login info (please check your spam if you don’t see it). \n\nIn this workshop you’ll learn:\n\nHow people and place interact in stories\nHow conflict and tension derive from setting as much as character\nHow a character’s motivations are influenced by geography and time\nHow writers can use setting to establish mood\, tone\, and genre for a piece of writing\n\nTime requirements\n\nWorkshop participants will be asked to find an example of setting from a book they’ve recently read to reflect on during the workshop.\n\nMaterials\n\nAll reading materials will be provided.\n\nWho should take this workshop?\n\nThis workshop is designed for beginning and intermediate writers who are looking to elevate their work by applying craft techniques and theory of setting to their writing.\n\n\nIf you need an accommodation for this workshop\, please contact us at access@writer.org. We will attempt to fulfill all requests\, but advance notice is necessary to arrange for some accessibility services.

SUMMARY:$40 Pop Up: Write Your Query Letter
DESCRIPTION:Learn the ins and outs of writing the perfect query letter!\nFor many writers\, to get a book deal first requires getting a literary agent. Through the querying process\, prospective authors pitch their book projects to agents using a query letter—a very short introduction of less than 500 words to you\, your book\, and why you think the agent in question is the perfect fit. \nThe goal of this class is to take the daunting task of writing a query letter and make it manageable. First\, we’ll discuss what a query letter is (and is not) and the general guidelines and terms used when writing one. Then\, we’ll break down the key components of a query letter\, using samples from actual query letters that have landed agents. We’ll also chat about other items that potential agents might request. Finally\, we’ll cover how to find potential agents to query\, how to manage your expectations throughout the process\, and red flags to be aware of when querying. \nThis 60-minute class will be packed with knowledge and tips to make the querying process feel less daunting and impossible. You’ll leave with detailed information on how to write and revise your letter\, how to be strategic with your queries\, and a list of post-class resources. \nNote: This workshop is ideal for writers of books for adults\, including novels and memoirs. While we will go in-depth on query letters\, workshop participants will not be sharing\, swapping\, or critiquing letters with other students.
