SUMMARY:Short Fiction Intensive with R. O. Kwon
DESCRIPTION:Work with acclaimed author R. O. Kwon to revise your stories\, generate new work\, and prepare for publication.\nIn this 10-month intensive class\, we’ll workshop our short fiction\, whether they’re stories or excerpts. Together\, we’ll delve into fiction-writing possibilities\, hopes\, investigations\, and leaps of faith. We’ll have time and space for everyone to workshop several pieces of fiction\, including revisions. In addition\, when possible\, we’ll also explore in-class writing exercises. \nWe’ll ask\, among other questions: what does it mean to revise\, and how can you figure out what works best for you? I tend to avoid generalizations\, but it’s pretty safe to say that every writer revises\, and often heavily: Kerouac bragged that he’d written On the Road in one go\, but after he died\, they learned about his drafts. \nFinally\, we’ll discuss and—if this is a goal of yours—work toward publication. Please come ready for both rigor and play. \nAPPLICATION DEADLINE: July 23\, 2024 \n\nWorkshop Schedule\nThis class meets via Zoom every other Wednesday\, August 7\, 2024 – May 28\, 2025 for a total of 21 sessions\, with breaks for holidays and dedicated writing periods. Between Zoom meetings\, participants can expect readings and assignments\, as well as individual feedback from the instructor. \n\nPraise for R. O. Kwon\n“Exhibit is extraordinary: brisk\, jolting\, brilliant\, beautiful\, true. A ghost story\, a tale of passion\, a captivating portrait of how art is made\, it turns myths upside down\, assumptions inside out\, all in the most exquisite prose in the bookstore. Kwon is one of the finest American writers\, and her latest is a must for all readers.” —Andrew Sean Greer\, Pulitzer Prize-winning author of Less is Lost \n“A rare jewel of a book\, at once forceful and unrepentant\, delicate and shimmering. R. O. Kwon carves language into a wondrous\, jagged thing\, revealing facets of desire usually hidden. To read Exhibit is to feel time slow down.” —C Pam Zhang\, TWC instructor and bestselling author of How Much of These Hills Is Gold and Land of Milk and Honey \n\nApplications\nAcceptance into the workshop is required before registering. Only 1 seat available! \nTo be considered for the program\, potential candidates should submit: \n\nA 1-3 paragraph cover letter detailing their interest in the program\nA writing sample of one short story\n\nSend your submission to laura.spencer@writer.org by July 23\, 2024. \nRolling admission\, so applications will close as soon as an applicant is accepted into the program.
