Learn the ins and outs of writing the perfect query letter!
For many writers, to get a book deal first requires getting a literary agent. Through the querying process, prospective authors pitch their book projects to agents using a query letter—a very short introduction of less than 500 words to you, your book, and why you think the agent in question is the perfect fit.
The goal of this class is to take the daunting task of writing a query letter and make it manageable. First, we’ll discuss what a query letter is (and is not) and the general guidelines and terms used when writing one. Then, we’ll break down the key components of a query letter, using samples from actual query letters that have landed agents. We’ll also chat about other items that potential agents might request. Finally, we’ll cover how to find potential agents to query, how to manage your expectations throughout the process, and red flags to be aware of when querying.
This 60-minute class will be packed with knowledge and tips to make the querying process feel less daunting and impossible. You’ll leave with detailed information on how to write and revise your letter, how to be strategic with your queries, and a list of post-class resources.
Note: This workshop is ideal for writers of books for adults, including novels and memoirs. While we will go in-depth on query letters, workshop participants will not be sharing, swapping, or critiquing letters with other students.
