The Writer’s Center welcomes four recently-published DC-area authors to discuss the inspirations, obstacles, and lessons gleaned on their writing journeys. Each of them has engaged with The Writer’s Center in the course of their careers. The event will include brief readings and ample time for audience questions and discussion.
Elizabeth Bruce’s debut story collection, Universally Adored & Other One Dollar Stories, was published in January 2024 by the Athens, Greece-based Vine Leaves Press. Her debut novel, And Silent Left the Place, won Washington Writers’ Publishing House’s Fiction Award, ForeWord Magazine’s Bronze Fiction Prize, and was one of two finalists for the Texas Institute of Letters’ Award for Best Work of First Fiction. Bruce has published prose in the USA, UK, Canada, Australia, New Zealand, Israel, Sweden, Romania, India, South Korea, Malawi, Yemen, and The Philippines.
Tom Navratil grew up in Illinois and Wisconsin, and graduated from Haverford College. His debut novel, Dog’s Breakfast, is a comedy of international intrigue, inspired by his experiences as a U.S. diplomat. Tom’s humor writing has appeared in Points in Case, Weekly Humorist, Slackjaw, and many other publications.
Bernardine (Dine) Watson is a nonfiction writer and poet who lives in Washington, D.C. Dine’s memoir: Transplant, the story of her battle with kidney disease, won the 2023 Washington Writers’ Publishing House prize for nonfiction and appeared on National Public Radio’s 2023 list of “Books We Love.” Dine was selected by Poets and Writers magazine as one of their “5 over 50” debut authors for 2023. Her poetry has been published in many local and national journals.
Lauren D. Woods is the author of The Great Grown-Up Game of Make-Believe, winner of the 2024 Autumn House Fiction Prize. Originally from the Dallas area, she now lives and writes in Washington, DC. Her writing has appeared in Best Small Fictions, The Antioch Review, The Normal School, Passages North, and elsewhere. Lauren works in consulting and lives with her husband, four children, two cats, and a guinea pig.
