Want to learn about a handful of fun poetic forms and practice writing a few?
Build your literary muscles by practicing a mix of five contemporary and traditional forms: sonnets, golden shovels, abecedarians, villanelles, and sestinas. Classes are a mix of instruction, reading sample poems, lots of tips, Q&A, and sharing what we write (optional, but encouraged). Struggling to find time to write? Each class will include 20-30 minutes of writing time to begin drafting your own poem.
Live video conference: This workshop will be held via our online video conferencing platform, Zoom. You can view brief tutorials on using the platform here. On the start date or the day before, participants will receive an email with login info (please check your spam if you don’t see it).
In this workshop you’ll learn:
- the rules for, and examples of, five poetic forms: sonnets, golden shovels, abecedarians, villanelles, and sestinas
- how to find the best topics that fit best with certain forms
- how to write in rhyme and keep your poems from sounding sing-songy
- how writing in form can provide great practice with line breaks and repetition, and building compelling stories in your poems

- This class is for poets, and prose writers, with some experience who want to write poems i a variety of forms.
