Take your mastery of meter to the next level.
To explore some of the fine points of meter, we will examine how metrical patterns can vary between poets, do exercises to generate new poem drafts, practice scansion, and more. Participants are encouraged to bring a metrical poem they’ve already written, for feedback at the end of the workshop.
Live video conference: This workshop will be held via our online video conferencing platform, Zoom. You can view brief tutorials on using the platform here. On the start date or the day before, participants will receive an email with login info (please check your spam if you don’t see it).
In this workshop you’ll learn:
- Metrical substitutions and other variations
- Strong and weak stresses
- Headless lines, descending meter, and caesuras
- Enjambed and end-stopped lines
- How rhyme interacts with meter

- Poets who have taken “Natural Meter Crash Course” and/or who have some experience in writing metrical poems.
